Takoradi Kwame Nkrumah Roundabout opens to traffic

The Kwame Nkrumah roundabout in Takoradi that was closed for rehabilitation works about five weeks ago has been opened to traffic.

Seventy-five per cent of work on the rehabilitation of the roundabout has been completed, with the remaining 25 per cent expected to be completed early next year.

The suspension of the rehabilitation works to open the roundabout to traffic is to ensure free flow of traffic during the forthcoming Yuletide.

Some road users who spoke to the Daily Graphic said it was a good idea.

According to them this would reduce the amount of time they spent in traffic everyday while commuting in and out of Takoradi.

Others however, said it would have been better if the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) had allowed the construction company, Justmoh Construction Company Limited to complete the rehabilitation works before opening it to traffic.

The closure of the roundabout badly affected economic activities in the city since most farmers and traders who did not want to endure the heavy traffic situation preferred to transport their goods to other markets in the Western Region.

The Urban Roads Engineer of the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Rosby Kobby Mensah had earlier in November said a total of GH₵ 500,000.00 had been spent on the project. The Daily Graphic was however unable to obtain total cost of the rehabilitation project.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the STMA, Mr. John Laste said work on the remaining 25 per cent of the roundabout was expected to last for two weeks when work resumes.
He said an exact date to commence work on the remaining 25 per cent of the roundabout would be known by mid-December this year.
