STC staff demonstrate over "meagre" salaries; passengers left stranded

The demonstrating workers' list their demands Passengers of Intercity State Transport Company in Accra have been stranded all Wednesday morning, as workers demonstrated to protest poor conditions of service.

The workers, wearing red arm bands, burnt spent tyres and chanted war songs to drum home their concerns.

The agitated workers are protesting what they say is a non-increment of salaries over the last ten years and management’s refusal to release their provident fund to them.

They also allege mismanagement of the company, and demand that the entire management be sacked. Some also questioned the ownership of the business, claiming that a consultant had pocketed part of their provident fund. One of the agitated workers explaining the workers concerns.

A senior driver, they alleged was paid GHS300, with a Grade 1 driver worth GHS 249, a Grade 2 on 214 and Grade 3 on GHS195 while a sales assistant is paid GHS120, all of which are all before statutory deductions".

Meanwhile the Management is meeting over the workers demands and action.
