Social Media won't be shut down on Election Day - President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama insists that the government will not shut down social media platforms on Election Day.

The President told the audience at the National Democratic Congress campaign launch at the Cape Coast Stadium that contrary to reports, social media will not be shut down.

“I want to assure the people of Ghana that government has no intention to shut down social media on Election Day,” President Mahama said.

The Inspector General of the Police (IGP), John Kudalor had earlier revealed his intention to ban social media on Election Day.

The IGP said it was one of the options the Police were considering as a means of reducing the publication of false information which inflame the passion of the electorate.

Despite heavy criticisms in the wake of his comments, the IGP later reiterated that blocking social media platforms are unavoidable if they will foment trouble during the elections.
