He said as Chairman of ECOWAS, President John Mahama had committed himself to continuing the process of rallying international support for countries in the sub-region which were in distress, particularly those that were hit by the Ebola disease.

Mr Amissah-Arthur was interacting with the President of Sierra Leone, Mr Ernest Bai Koroma, at the Kotoka International Airport last Saturday night when the Sierra Leonean leader made a brief stopover in Accra.

The Vice-President  thanked Mr Koroma for the stopover and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to foster closer ties with the rest of ECOWAS and the larger African region.

Mission

Briefing journalists, Mr Koroma said he was stopping over after attending the African Union Summit on the UN Security Council Reform in Zambia.

He said the summit was aimed at promoting and canvassing the African Union’s common position on the negotiations.

Ebola

Giving an update on the  Ebola outbreak  in Sierra Leone, President Koroma said his government had so far made substantial progress in the fight against the disease, adding that no new cases were being recorded.

He said the country had a grace period of 42 days to be declared Ebola-free, if nothing untoward happened during that period.

Mr Koroma thanked President Mahama for his leadership style that had helped to abate the Ebola crisis, given the massive donor support Sierra Leone received.

He said Africa had lessons to learn from the outbreak of the disease and called for a permanent sub-regional health system to collaborate with international partners towards building a resilient heath system in the sub-region.
