Shooting Drama at Tamale Sec School

AN 18-year-old student of the Tamale Secondary School, Razak Mohammed, has been arrested by the Tamale Police for shooting at his female classmate and wounding her in the left knee.

The victil-Saeed, also 18, is on admission at the Tamale Regional Hospital.

Doctors are yet to operate on her to remove a number of pellets from the knee whilst the locally-made pistol, which Mohammed used to fire the shot, has been impounded by the police.

The students, both boarders, are in their final year.

The Tamale Municipal Commander of Police, Superintendent Isaac Offei, briefing the Graphic said the incident happened last Monday morning during the breakfast break.

He said Sahadatu decided to forgo breakfast and use the time to study and as she stayed back in the classroom, Mohammed approached her, removed the pistol from his bag and proudly displayed it before her.

Mr. Offei said Mohammed told Sahadatu that the pistol belonged to him and that he uses it for self-defence.

Sahadatu, the Commander said, disbelieved that the pistol was a real one and carried live bullets and told Mohammed so.

She was said to have told Mohammed that her mother had bought similar toy pistols for her siblings at home and immediately, Mohammed turned away from her, holding the pistol.

Sahadatu, the Police Commander said, continued with her studies and moments later heard a gun shot and immediately felt a sharp pain in her left knee.

According to Mr. Offei, Sahadatu screamed in fright and afterwards lost consciousness but her scream attracted some students to the classroom.

They carried her to the headmaster’s office from where she was rushed to the hospital.

Mr. Offei said initially when Mohammed was interrogated by the school authorities, he denied having a pistol.

However when his school bag was searched, the pistol was found in it.

When the Graphic called at the hospital, Sahadatu who had regained consciousness, was chatting with her school mates who were visiting her.

Her knee was bandaged and had blood stains on it.
