Seven women said to be engaged in activities in relation to the abuse of the Ghana cedi note have been arrested at various locations in Accra.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service organised the operation that saw the arrest of the seven for allegedly abusing and improperly handling Ghana cedi notes for commercial purposes.
The arrests followed a tip-off which led to a swoop on the suspects, who were allegedly using cedi notes to create money bouquets and money cakes for sale.
The practice constituted an improper use of the national currency and formed part of activities prohibited under the law, including altering, decorating, crumpling, tearing or otherwise defacing cedi notes.
The Head of Statistics at the Currency Management Department of the Bank of Ghana, Dinah Bonzie, has explained that investigations were ongoing and the suspects would subsequently be processed and put before the court.
