Security chiefs visit task force at Alavanyo-Nkonya

nspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed AlhassanThe Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, and the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Opoku Adusei, have visited the joint Military-Police task force deployed to maintain law and order at Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Volta Region.

The visit by the delegation was to consolidate the commitment of the government to find a lasting solution to the conflict in the area.

While there, the team met the chiefs and elders of the two communities in separate fora and assured them of the commitment of the security agencies to promote peace and maintain law and order for socio-economic activities and development in the area.

The joint Military-Police delegation also advised the chiefs and people of the two communities to co-operate to achieve the objectives they both agreed to work towards.

In his response, the Chief of Alavanyo Kpeme, Togbega Tsedze Atakorah VII, assured the team of their co-operation.

For his part, the Chief of Ahodwo and Nifahene of the Biakoye Traditional Area, Nana Ampem Darko, told the security chiefs that on their return from Accra, they had been doing everything possible to realise the purpose of the meeting.

He pledged the commitment of his people to collaborate with the security agencies to promote peace in the communities.

The IGP, Mr Alhassan, in his remarks, charged the security officers to be good ambassadors of the state by conducting themselves professionally.

He also urged them to be civil towards the people and respect their traditions and culture.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Adusei, lauded the high morale that had been displayed by the security men and reminded them to be professional, bearing in mind that they would be accountable for their actions.

The situation in the two communities has been calm since the deployment of the security agencies in the area, with only one incident recorded on June 24, 2013 when the curfew imposed on them was lifted.

The perpetrators, eight in all, have since been arraigned before court.

Other members of the entourage were the Director General of Police Operations, Commissioner of Police (COP) John Kudalor; the Public Relations Officer of the Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cephas Authur; the Acting General Officer Commanding the Southern Command, Cornel J. W.K.  Asabre; Director–General Joint Operations, Col Robert Nyaka, and the Director of Public Relations, Col M’Bawine Atintande.
