Companies and professionals in the electronic commerce, telecommunications industry, banks, as well as Internet service providers, software designers and solution providers in the mobile industry, are attending the two-day conference on the theme: “Unleashing Ghana’s online potential”.

Delegates from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Germany and Spain are participating in the conference, organised by Occupational Management Limited, Africa (OML Africa), an international human resource management consultancy company.

Government’s commitment

A Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who opened the conference, said the government was building the infrastructure in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the country to help bridge the accessibility gap.

He said the current growth in the ICT industry was a reflection of Ghana’s progress in the industry over the past decade.

Mr Kwakye, who said the services of some government ministries, departments and agencies could now be easily accessed online, called on people to utilise those services for their own comfort.

He said the government was coming up with a policy to check cyber fraud and also ensure the protection of children online.

Private sector commitment

The Event Director of OML Africa, Mr Paul Asinor, said the conference was timely, as the increased penetration of the Internet and affordable telecommunications had opened a massive market for people to buy and sell online.

He said technology, through mobile phones and tablets, had made it possible for people to stay in the comfort of their homes and access the job market for employment or buy goods, a situation which he said called for actions to meet those needs.

The Director of Information Technology (IT) Application of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) of the Ministry of Communications, Mrs Veronica Boateng, said e-Commerce solution would need nationwide robust Internet infrastructure to elicit successful use and experience.

To that end, she said, the NITA was managing a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) infrastructure, which would soon add more kilometres to the existing 780km fibre with the Western Corridor under the Ghana Fibre Infrastructure Project.
