Another Ghanaian murdered in Bronx: Body discovered among refuse by scrap collector

Ghana's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has demanded a thorough investigation after a 24-year-old Ghanaian caregiver, Joseph Owusu, was found dead at a dumpsite in the Bronx, making him the second Ghanaian murdered in New York within one week.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, it was explained that the Mission's officials, led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-adas, visited the bereaved family on the directive of Ambassador Samuel Yao Kumah.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, phoned in to express heartfelt condolences and the solidarity of President Mahama and the government of Ghana with the deceased's mother, Mavis.

Owusu had been missing for approximately two weeks before his body was discovered among refuse by a scrap collector.

He worked as a caregiver supporting persons with disabilities and served as a chorister and organist at the Ghana United Methodist Church in the Bronx.

"I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York," the Minister said.

His brother, Kwadwo, called for a thorough and transparent police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

The Police have indicated to the family that an autopsy is being conducted on the body as investigations continue.

The tragedy comes just days after 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was fatally shot in the Bronx on October 29 while on his way to school.
