The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, has said science and technology are the key drivers to the development of every nation.

He said the two underpin economic advances, improvements in health systems, education and infrastructure.

The Chief Executive said this when Prempeh College, winners of the 2017 National Science and Mathematics Quiz (NSMQ), led by their Headmaster, Mr Samuel Kwadwo Fordwour, presented the trophy to him at an impressive ceremony in Kumasi.

Invest in science

Mr Antwi stressed that it was, therefore, prudent for developing countries to invest in science education for their youth who were the future leaders, as well as provide continuous skills training for workers and managers.

He noted that countries that had taken science and technology seriously had succeeded in making substantial advances in reducing poverty and inequality.

Mr Antwi was of the view that adopting appropriate technologies would lead directly to higher productivity, which was the key to growth and, therefore, urged schools in the metropolis to encourage students to develop interest in science and technology.

Commendations

He commended the headmaster, his staff, the students and the entire workers of the school for making the metropolitan assembly as well as the entire Ashanti Region proud.

Mr Antwi, however, urged the school to improve upon what it had gained and gave an assurance of his administration's support.

He on behalf of his administration presented a cheque for GH¢5,000 to the school.

Mr Fordwour, on behalf of the entire school, thanked the Chief Executive for his kind gesture and assured him of his staff’s preparedness to make significant improvement in the school.

He said many parents would like to gain admission for their wards but there were no rooms to accommodate them and, therefore, called on the administration to assist in that regard.
