The wheelchairs are meant to assist persons who are either paralysed or physically challenged in the legs and cannot move around freely.

Known as the “Wheels for Hope” project, the initiative was instituted by the Rotary Club of Accra-Labone, District 9102.

As a result, the programme was used to raise funds by members and some individuals to support the worthy cause.

Some also pledged to donate a number of wheelchairs to the club as it begins the distribution.

The programme also coincided with the official hand-over ceremony which saw the old executive of the club pass on the baton to the new executive.

Various individuals who have distinguished themselves in serving the club in various ways were also honoured to serve as a source of encouragement to others.

Unveiling

In his speech after unveiling the wheelchairs, the Past Rotary International Director, Mr Sam Okudzeto, lauded the innovations introduced by the new executive, and urged them to continue to introduce such ideas to enrich the club.

Mr Okudzeto, who is a legal practitioner, also admonished members of the club and those in other zones to support the initiative.

“I am personally touched by the initiative introduced by the members of the Rotary Club of Accra-Labone to help better the lives of the underprivileged in society,” he said.

He also donated some cash and pledged to support the project with a wheelchair to make it successful.

Planned projects

In an interview with the Daily Graphic after the programme, the President of the Rotary Club of Accra-Labone, Mr Apanga Abugri Lamtiig, said the launch of the project was a dream come true.

According to him, the “Wheels for Hope” project was among the various projects his administration would embark on during the 2016-2017 Rotary year.

He said among other things that his administration would continue works on the renovation of the Centre for Abused Children and upgrade the recovery room at the Children’s Ward of the Nsawam Government Hospital.

Mr Lamtiig also assured that the current administration would ensure membership growth and retention.

He further called on all members to donate towards the project in order to exceed the set target.

Commenting on the selection criteria for the distribution of the wheelchairs to the health institutions, he stated that they would be chosen after a need assessment had been done.
