The young policeman, Constable Wonder Kovey, died on the spot after he was shot at the back at close range by an unidentified assailant at a hide-out of suspected criminals known as Zorokpome, close to the border.

Constable Kovey was leading the team deployed to the area to make arrest after an undercover investigation last Wednesday.

Two persons have been arrested by the Aflao police to assist in investigations into the matter.

Briefing
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Volta Regional Operations Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Ebenezer Kweku Asare, said due to the high crime rate in the Aflao vicinity, normally police officers were deployed to the area to aid their colleagues in providing security and also clamp down on criminal activities.

According to him, last Wednesday the team on operation did an undercover investigation which revealed that a spot at Zorokpome was the rendezvous for criminals such as thieves, robbers and drug dealers to relax and do business, including selling narcotic drugs and stolen items.

Mr Asare said the team was, therefore, deployed to the area around 6:30 a.m. to carry out a raid on the suspected criminals.

Gunshot
The operation commander said “immediately Constable Kovey, who was leading the team, entered the spot, we heard a gunshot and all the people around took to their heels”.

Mr Asare said the bullet hit their colleague’s back and penetrated through the left side of his chest killing him instantly.

The body, he said, had been transferred to the Police Hospital while investigations had commenced into the incident.
