The award was the outcome of a nation-wide media poll conducted in the  Daily Graphic and the Business & Financial Times, and audited by Price Waterhouse Coopers, plus the votes of private and public sector business players gathered for the fifth annual forum.

At a ceremony in Accra at the weekend, Mrs Quartey-Papafio was given the award by Mrs Edith Dankwa, CEO of Business & Financial Times. Other winners were Mr Kenneth Thompson, Businessman of the Year; Dalex Finance, Business of the Year; Mr Mike Nyinaku, Entrepreneur of the Year; Databank, Business Pioneer of the Year, and Unilever which was recognised as a Business with a conscience, for its Corporate social responsibility.

The Reroy Group CEO used the occasion to express confidence in the ability of Ghanaians to not only pull through the current economic challenges but also blaze the trail in Africa for economic performance, especially in the area of energy.

The GEF Excellence Awards cover all sectors, including Accounting, Aerospace & Defence, Automotive & Transport Equipment, Banking, Conglomerates, Energy, Financial Services, Manufacturing, Metals & Mining, Pharmaceuticals and Telecommunications.

Started in 2012, GEF is a private sector-led initiative and platform created by Business & Financial Times to bring together captains of industry and thought leaders to discuss and debate key issues affecting the Ghanaian economy and offer solutions to help it overcome the challenges in order to enhance the achievement of the country’s economic development plans. The event aims at bringing up new thinking and policy alternatives to help shape the country’s agenda for economic growth.

Held annually over the past five years, the event brings together leading think tanks, media gurus and leaders in civil society. Having set a five-year agenda on the theme, ‘A Ghanaian Owned-Economy: Setting the Agenda for achieving it’, organisers went a step further this year to organise the awards to help promote this five-year agenda through awarding and encouraging individuals and organisations who have performed exceptionally in advancing the Ghanaian economy.
