The move is in response to a directive by the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as part of efforts to facilitate trade and boost economic activities in the West African sub-region.

The Commissioner of the Customs Division of the GRA , Mr Isaac Crentsil was in the Northern Region to kick start  the  removal of  the barriers and all internal customs check points to facilitate trade between Ghana and its ECOWAS neighbours .

Mr Crentsil who symbolically removed the customs barrier at Yapei on the Tamale-Buipe Highway in the Central Gonja District in the Northern Region on Monday said the exercise is going to be piloted for now to assess the impact.

Traders

However, some traders at the Yapei barrier have kicked against the removal of the barrier saying it would deprive them of their livelihood.
According to them, once the barrier is removed, vehicles would no more stop there for them to sell to passengers and drivers of articulated trucks that plied that route.
