Relatives of alleged cop killer attack journalists

Relatives of a man alleged to have killed a police officer in an attempt to escape arrest nearly attacked journalists who took pictures of the accused on the premises of the Accra Central District Court.

It was as if the relatives of the accused, Vincent Sackey, were possessed as they rushed on the journalists shouting, “Delete the pictures. Do you know who you are dealing with? Delete the pictures if you want to leave here alive.’’But for the timely intervention of police officers stationed at the court, the journalists would have been assaulted.Sackey was alleged to have used his 4x4 vehicle to crash Corporal Albert Ahiave to death at the Airport Residential Area in Accra when the deceased attempted to arrest him over a GH¢500,000 stealing case.He has been charged with murder and has been remanded to reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Ebenezer Kweku Ansah, on November 25, 2016.That was after the prosecution had asked for more time to continue with investigations into the case.FactsThe prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Kwesi Adjei, told the court that Corporal Ahiave was part of a team of investigators tasked to arrest Sackey over a stealing incident at the Universal Merchant Bank in September, this year.He said on November, 4, 2016, the investigative team got information that Sackey was in a hotel around the Airport area but when they got there he had checked out.ASP Adjei said the team later spotted Sackey driving a Ford 4x4, trailed him with a taxicab and were able to catch up with him at the Airport traffic lights.Cop’s ordealThe prosecutor said Corporal Ahiave got out of the taxi and “knocked at the door of Sackey’s vehicle who lowered the glass.’’“Sackey then locked the central lock and started moving the car while Corporal Ahiave’s hands were already in the car. Sackey sped off with the police officer hanging on the bonnet of the vehicle,’’ he said.ASP Adjei further stated that despite several pleas from Corporal Ahiave for Sackey to stop the car, he (Sackey) did not stop.“Sackey finally crashed into the walls of the Egyptian Embassy at Airport Residential Area. Corporal Ahiave sustained several injuries and was rushed to the Police Hospital but he died,’’ he said. The prosecutor added that Sackey was immediately arrested at the scene by some private security men.
