Reintroduce Agricultural Science in basic school

The Managing Director (MD) of Blue Skies Company Limited, Mr Alistair Djimatey, has urged the government to reintroduce Agricultural Science into the school curricula at the basic level of education, and make it a core subject that will be examinable.

He explained that if the subject was made important at the basic level, people who turned out as farmers would have attained some education in the career and become knowledgeable to produce enough food to feed the country.

Mr Djimatey was speaking at the 20th anniversary celebration of Messiah Preparatory School at Akuse in the Eastern Region.

He said since farming was an important ingredient in the countrys’ development, it was pertinent that agriculture was made a principal subject in school in order to have an effective food production system.

He said, “Because a large number of farmers are not educated and so cannot read to follow instructions contained in manuals, it has led to low yields in agricultural production.”

“Most farmers cannot read and interpret instructions required in their fields of work and this has led to significant reduction in the amount of food that is produced,” he added.

He reasoned that since Ghana was aiming at becoming industrialised, there was need for an efficient, active and enlightened agricultural system based on research that would  produce to feed industries and create jobs.

The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Director of Education, Madam Rose Yaa Akanyi, encouraged chiefs in the area to release lands to schools for backyard farming.

She said that would make the children in the municipality adopt the right attitude to farming and also help in the profession gaining the respect it deserves.

She reminded parents and guardians of the national policy that required that all children of school age must be in school and urged them to diligently abide by that directive.
