Rehabilitated Dawhenya Project handed over to govt

The rehabilitated Dawhenya Irrigation Project was yesterday handed over to the government of Ghana by the Korean government.

After 10 months of rehabilitation, the US$3.6-million project is expected to increase and boost agricultural production in the area to ensure food security in the country.

Implemented under the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the project is also expected to raise the standard of living of the people of Dawhenya and its surrounding towns and villages with the construction of schools, teachers’ bungalows, as well as a fish pond.

It is also expected to build agricultural capacity.

Korea’s assistance

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony, the Korean Ambassador to Ghana, Dr Kyun Jea-Min, said the government of Korea was prepared to assist Ghana to develop its rural areas through Korea’s integrated rural development approach.

“We Koreans remember the help we received from the international community in our development stages,” he said, adding, “In order to return that favour, my government has continued to provide development aid to developing countries in the form of concessional loans, grants and technical cooperation.”

Installation of new equipment

Throwing more light on the project, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Clement Kofi Humado, said project had installed five electric pumps with a capacity of 55kw each and added that the pumps would readily make available water for the crops.

He said a new rice milling machine, with the capacity to mill two tonnes per hour, had been installed with a dryer, paddy, separator, whitener, de-stoner, grading unit and an elevator.

“With the installation of this machine, milled rice from this scheme will be of high quality to increase its competitiveness, not only on the domestic market but also meet sub-regional demands,” he added.

Avoid encroachment

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, cautioned residents and estate developers in the area to desist from encroaching on the land.

According to him, the government had legally acquired the land for the benefit of the people of the community and its environs and added that it would be in the interest of encroachers to vacate the place.

The MP said he would work closely with the Minister of Food and Agriculture, the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the assembly to demolish illegal structures in the area.
