Residents of James Town and surrounding communities who were affected by the recent rains in Accra have benefited from a donation of building materials and other relief items.
The items included asbestos roofing sheets, blankets, mosquito nets and used clothing. They were presented to support victims of the rains who, until the arrival of the gifts, were sleeping in tents and in classrooms.
The Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio Constituency, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) jointly presented the items.
At the presentation, Mr Vanderpuye said it was sad that the rains had made life uncomfortable for the victims and compelled them to sleep in tents, on compounds and in classrooms.
He observed that many of the buildings in the constituency were old and weak. He said until the old buildings were pulled down and reconstructed, the situation would continue anytime it rained heavily.
“If we are going to solve this problem once and for all, we must think of redeveloping the communities within the Odododiodio constituency. We need to have a new residential model under which buildings would be pulled down to pave the way for new ones to be built.
Mr Vanderpuye has, therefore, called on well-to-do Ghanaians and investors not to think “low” of the constituency but channel their resources into constructing fitting structures for the residents.
One of the beneficiaries, Madam Lucy Welberton, thanked the MP and NADMO for the support and called for urgent measures to address flooding in the constituency.
