The drugs are made up of essential drugs such as Antimalarial, Analgesics, Antibiotics, Anthelmintic, Antacids, Antianaemia, Vitamins, Antidiarrheal, Antiamoebic and Antiemetics medicines.

Making the presentation, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG), Mr James Ohemeng Kyei said the donation was part of their cooperate social responsibility to society.

He said the presentation was also part of activities to mark World Pharmacists Day, which was being celebrated in the country for the first time.

At the 2009 Council Meeting of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) congress in Istanbul, Turkey, the Turkish Pharmaceutical Association suggested the annual celebration of a World Pharmacist day to be organised on September 25, every year, which was unanimously accepted.

The day is therefore set aside by pharmacists the world over, to showcase the role of pharmacists in health improvement.

Mr Kyei said the Society would each year choose a rural community in the country where the day would be marked, while a similar donation would be made to a health facility in the area.

The Minister of Health, Ms Sherry Ayittey, who received the donation, commended Mr James Kyei for the gesture and challenged the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana to operate in rural communities with the view of ensuring equal distribution of drugs in the country.

She assured the pharmacist that the government would continue to put in place policies that stood the chance of improving operations of the health sector.

The minister handed over the drugs to the Anglican Bishop of the Internal Province of Ghana and Bishop of Kumasi, Most Reverend Dr Daniel Yinkah- Sarfo.

While commending the pharmacists for the gesture, the Most Reverend Dr Yinkah-Sarfo said; “I have been following media publicity on the dispute between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the National Labour Commission (NLC) and some health professionals including Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA), which are not fully resolved yet. I therefore appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to personally, intervene to ensure the speedy resolution of all labour disputes in the health sector”.
