Prez visits families of dead soldiers

The President directed the Chief of Staff to give some money to the families of the two naval officers and the two engineers.

He noted that the Ghana Navy and WAPCo would have some special packages for the deceased.

He said the money that the government would give out would be a symbol of its appreciation of the dedicated services of the deceased.

The President said the government would continue to support the task force to succeed in its efforts at fighting illegal mining in the country's water bodies.

He said the activities of illegal miners, including foreigners, had polluted some of the country’s water bodies, a development which, he said, had compelled the Ghana Water Company to take a decision not to treat water from some of the water bodies for consumption.

He said the government would not allow any illegal miner to continue to destroy the nation's environment.

Touching on safety measures, the President called for more safety precautions to be taken in the course of work.

For instance, the naval officers should have been in life jackets while performing that duty in the river, he said.

The heads of the families thanked President Mahama for the gesture of visiting them to express his condolence and support.

They asked the government to see to the welfare of the children of the deceased.
