Receiving separate delegations from the Brong Ahafo and Upper East regions at the Flagstaff House last Friday, who informed him of the funeral arrangements of the two, the President said they would be celebrated for serving the nation well.

Mr Adjei-Mensah would be buried at Techiman on August 22, while the final funeral rites of Alhaji Ayarna would be held at Bawku in the Upper East Region the same day.

Adjei-Mensah

Mr Adjei-Mensah was a former Minister of the Brong Ahafo Region and Minister of Works and Housing under the Rawlings regime.
He was also the Member of Parliament for the Techiman North Constituency for three terms, serving on the ticket of the NDC from 1992 until he stepped aside in 2004.

Before his death, he was the Board Chairman of the Bui Power Authority (BPA).

A former president of the Ghana Bar Association in the Brong Ahafo Region, he served on the consultative assembly that drew up the 1992 Constitution.

He left behind a widow and 10 children - all females - including Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, the current Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

President Mahama described Mr Adjei-Mensah as a political giant who served his party, the NDC and his country with distinction.

He said it was during the tenure of Mr Adjei-Mensah as Minister of Works and Housing that the famous Keta Sea Defence Project was executed.

"It is one of the monumental projects that the government has undertaken and the late former minister will forever be remembered for it," he said.

The Omanhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV, led the delegation which also included the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku.

Imoro Ayarna

Alhaji Ayarna died at the age of 98 in his native Bawku.

The politician and businessman was a founder member of the Convention People's Party (CPP) which won independence for Ghana.
In 1969, he founded the People’s Action Party (PAP) following the lifting of the ban on party politics.

He contested the 1979 presidential election as an independent candidate. The election was won by Dr Hilla Limann of the People's National Party (PNP).

During General Acheampong military regime, Alhaji Ayarna was sentenced to death by firing squad in 1973 on a charge of treason, but the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.

The leader of the delegation was the Paramount Chief of Bawku, Naba Abugrago Azorka.
