Prez Mahama swears in 2 new envoys; Receives letters of 3 others

President John Dramani Mahama yesterday swore in two new envoys at the Flagstaff House and charged them to portray a positive image of the country at their duty posts.

He said the nation had no room for envoys who played to the gallery. 

The envoys are Mrs Zita Sabah  Okaikoi who is heading for the Czech Republic and William Awinador Kanyirige who is going to Nigeria.

The President described the two as experienced people who had the wherewithal to turn things around for the nation.

Relations

President Mahama urged them to improve the long standing relations that Ghana had with the two countries.

On the Czech Republic, he said that country had contributed to Ghana's industrial development since the era of Ghana’s Founder and first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

President Mahama pointed out that the fact that the two countries had enjoyed fruitful relations over the years was a testimony that there were brighter days ahead for them. 

On Nigeria, President Mahama said Ghana's development was linked with that country’s since Nigeria was the largest economy in West Africa.

Letters of credence

In a related development, the President received the letters of credence of three new envoys accredited to Ghana, while the outgoing Japanese Ambassador, Mr Naoto Nikai, called to bid him farewell after a three-year stay in Ghana.

The incoming envoys are Mr Dmitry Yu. Suslov, of Russia; Mr Babikir Elsiddig Mohamed Elamin, Republic of Sudan, and Ms  Dan Nana Aicha Dan Ladi of Niger.

President Mahama expressed the hope that their stay in the country would help strengthen the relationship between Ghana and their respective countries.

He commended the Sudan for granting scholarship to 16 Ghanaian students to study in some of its higher institutions recently and said Ghana was doing its best to reopen its mission in the Sudan.

On Niger, President Mahama welcomed the initiatives of that county to help Nigeria overcome the Boko Haram menace.

Receiving the Russian envoy, President Mahama traced the longstanding relationship between the two countries and said that had manifested in Russia's contribution to Ghana's development process.
