President Mahama inaugurates new chancery for Ghana Mission in Turkey

President Mahama being accorded a state welcome at the Ankara AirportPresident John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated an embassy for the Ghanaian mission in Ankara, Turkey, and expressed the hope that it will facilitate the acquisition of visas by Turkish investors.

Besides, he said, the establishment of the embassy would strengthen Ghana-Turkey relations in the areas of trade and diplomacy.

The President, who is in Turkey on a state visit at the invitation of President Abdullah Gül, noted that Ghana and Turkey shared the same values of respect for human rights, democracy and rule of law.

He, therefore, stressed the need for the two countries to deepen their collaboration for the benefit of their people.

President Mahama said Ghana and Turkey already had good working relations in the private sector, and asked for the ties to be extended to the governmental level as well.

He commendedTurkey for its emergence as a strong business community, producing many goods.

Located partly in southern Europe and partly in Asia, Turkey began diplomatic relations with Ghana in 1957, making Turkey one of the first countries to set up an embassy in Ghana.

However, in the mid-80s, Turkey had to close down its embassy in Accra due to a breakdown in relations but in March 2011, during a state visit to Ghana, President Abdullah Gul, re-opened that country’s chancery in Ghana thus opening a new chapter of ties between Ghana and Turkey.

President Mahama noted that Turkey had been an important contributor to world civilisation and was currently a force to reckon with in global politics, culture and business.

The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr Ahmet Davutoglu, said the unveiling of the new chancery marked a remarkable step in Turkey-Ghana relations.
“No condition will force us to leave Ghana again,” he assured.

President Mahama arrived in Turkey Monday for a three-day official visit. He was met on arrival at the Ankara Airport by the Minister for National Defence, Ismet Yilmaz and other officials of state.

President Mahama's itinerary for Tuesday include discussions with the Turkish President, Abdullah Gül, at the Presidential Palace.

Later, President Mahama will co-chair bilateral discussions between Ghana and Turkey. He will also meet with the Prime Minister of Turkey and attend a state dinner in his honour before moving to Instanbul for the next leg of the visit.
