President Mahama grants pardon to 863 convicted persons

President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities marking Ghana's 70th Independence Anniversary.

A statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, October 5, 2026, said 819 of the beneficiaries were first offenders who had been granted outright release.

The President has also granted outright release to 13 persons aged 70 years and above and six others who are seriously ill.

In addition, 11 death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while the sentences of six persons serving life imprisonment have been reduced to 20 years.

Two other persons have also been granted outright release following special recommendations.

According to the statement, the decision was taken under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, after consultation with the Council of State.

The statement said the pardon formed part of activities to commemorate Ghana's 70th Independence Anniversary and provided an opportunity for an act of mercy and national reflection.

It said the exercise also covered three petitions and three other cases, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 863.

Relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President's decision.

Ghana will mark its 70th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2027.

The statement was signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
