Power supply to Teshie, surrounding communities improves
Electricity supply to Teshie and its surrounding communities in Accra has improved, following the installation of 77 new transformers by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in those areas.

The new transformers were installed to support and sustain the ECG’s new initiative of mounting electricity meters on electric poles, as part of a nationwide network improvement project.
The initiative is part of a plan to, among other things, ensure supply reliability under a “distribution system loss reduction and network improvement project”.
Briefing the media after a tour of the Teshie township, to inspect the new electric meters and transformers, the Deputy Minister of Power, Mr John Jinapor, said the initiative was part of government’s effort to improve electricity supply.
A total of $200 million has been earmarked for the project, out of which $150 million is being invested
to improve the distribution network and also replace energy meters with a prepayment metering technology for 400,000 customers in Accra.
The project is expected to be fully operational in all the 10 regions of Ghana in the next 10 years.d
Improved supply
Mr Jinapor said when the project was fully implemented, the entire nation would experience improved electricity supply and also facilitate improved revenue collection by the ECG.
“The project will ensure that every Ghanaian pays for the electricity used which is currently not the case, as some people have employed dubious ways to get power without paying the right charges,” he said.
Mr Jinapor said apart from the improved electricity supply, there would be a network system through which text messages would be sent to notify consumers of the remaining units of electricity on their prepaid meters.
“We have already started this and so far it seems to be going on successfully,” he added.
Touching on some other aspects of the project, the Project Engineer, Mr Colins Affah, said so far, residents of Teshie and Bortianor had benefited from the project.
“There were 147 transformers in Teshie but the new technology has made it possible for additional transformers to be installed to improve electricity supply in the area,” he said.
