Political parties asked to stay away from labour demo

Organised Labour has asked political parties whose intent wasto politicse their upcoming demonstration to stay away from infiltrating their ranks.

The group in a statement indicated that the demonstration was organised for workers and not political parties.

“We would like to emphasize that the demonstration is for workers. We therefore advise all political parties to stay away from the demonstration,” a statement issued and signed by Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said.

Organised Labour has planned to use the demonstration to impress on government to reduce recent increases in taxes and the refusal of government to reduce the recent increases in utility tariffs.

“We assure all working people of Ghana that all is set for a peaceful nationwide demonstration to express our outrage with the insensitive increases in taxes, levies and utility tariffs. All workers in both formal and informal sectors are expected to participate fully in the demonstration.”

In Accra, the demonstration will start from Obra Spot near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle at 7: 30 am prompt.

The routes for the demonstration in the regional capitals will be announced by Organised Labour in the various regions. Organised Labour has held several meetings to get government to reduce the taxes but to no avail.

The group has threatened a nationwide strike action after the demonstration.
