Police nab 2 men for selling rented cars

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly selling cars they had rented from car rental operators. They are said to have, in some cases, used the stolen cars to secure loans from microfinance institutions.

They are Nana Osei Antwi, alias Naasei, 34, and Seth Asare, 31, both unemployed.

A third suspect who has been identified as Foster is currently on the run.

So far, six car rental service companies have lodged complaints against the suspects.

“We have received series of reports from managers of car rental companies claiming that the suspects rented their cars and ran away with them,” the Odorkor District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Abraham Acquaye, told the Daily Graphic.

He said while the police were hunting for the suspects, another man, Mr Foster Duffour, lodged a complaint on August 11, 2014 that he had bought a Toyota saloon car from Seth Asare but his checks at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) established that the car belonged to a man named Mr Boakye Prempeh.

Documents different name

Mr Acquaye said the complainant claimed that he had paid GH¢1,600 for the car with registration number GR-1590 -13  but Asare failed to provide him with the car’s documents despite his persistent demand for them.

“At the DVLA office, the complainant found out that the car had been registered in the name of Mr Boakye Prempeh and he was able to obtain his mobile phone number,” the Odorkor Police Commander said.

Three cars retrieved

When the complainant contacted Mr Prempeh on phone, Mr Acquaye said, he learnt that Asare and his friends had rented the car and had gone missing for more than two months.

“The police then tracked the suspects and succeeded in arresting them on August 14, 2014, at Sowutuom. During the arrest, Asare escaped but he was accosted by some residents in the area and handed over to the police.”

The police, Mr Acquaye said, had since retrieved from the suspects three cars suspected to have been stolen.
