Police in Gambaga intercept cache of guns

The Police in Gambaga, the capital of the East Mamprusi District in the Northern Region have intercepted a Nissan patrol vehicle with six pump action guns and 130 cartridges.

The vehicle with registration number GE 5433-16 was coming from the Tamale direction towards Namong village in the Bunkprugu-Yunyon District when the police intercepted it on Friday morning about 10.30am.

There were six persons onboard, including the driver and one female.

The police upon a search in the vehicle retrieved six pump action guns and 130 cartridges.

The suspects whose identities are yet to be known have been detained by the police while the cache of weapons is also being kept for evidential purposes.

The spokesperson of the Northern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr. Mohammed Yussif Tanko confirmed the arrest but could not give names and ages of the six suspects arrested, adding that investigations into the matter were still ongoing.

Background

Last month the Namong village in the Bunkpurugu -Yunyon district experienced some sporadic gunshots in the area over disagreement of the siting of the district capital yet to be created Yunyon District to be carved out of the existing Bunkpurugu .

Since then tensions has been high in the area ahead of the naming of the new district capital. While some people are for the siting of the district capital in Yunyon, the constituency capital is others are also for Namong to be the district capital.
