Police hold four over Sogakope Assemblyman's death

The police have arrested and placed in custody, four persons they suspect may have played roles in the brazen murder of the assemblyman for Sogakope South Electoral Area, Marcus Mawutor Adzahli.

Marcus Adzahli was shot and stabbed several times in the presence of his wife and child at Sogakope in the Volta Region when a yet-to-be identified gang stormed his residence on March 1.

A statement issued by the Volta Regional police command and signed by the Regional Public Relations Officer, Cpl. Prince Dogbatse, said "The four are currently assisting Police investigation and will be duly arraigned before court."

The statement assured that the police were working "assiduously in partnership with all relevant stakeholders" to arrest all persons involved in the killing of the Assemblyman and also called on the public for support.

The statement also announced the arrest and detention of two Police officers in connection with the disappearance on March 7, 2020, of one service rifle at the Sogakope Police station.

"The Regional Police Command has directed that the two suspects are quickly transferred to the Regional Headquarters to assist investigation", the statement said.

It said investigation so far does not suggest any link between the missing weapon and the murder of the Sogakope Assemblyman.

"Note that the weapon in question disappeared on 07 March, 2020 whereas the unfortunate killing of the Assemblyman happened on 01 March, 2020. This is only an unfortunate coincidence and the command is resolved to get to the bottom of it.

"The situation at Sogakope Police station requires a review of the operational and administrative protocols and the Command is determined to do so.

"The Command seizes the opportunity to also urge the Media particularly to exercise great restraint and circumspection in their reportage so not to mislead the public.

"The Public is once again encouraged to support the Police in their work in order to apprehend those behind the killing of the Assemblyman.
