Police gun down two robbers

The Accra Regional Police Command has gunned down two robbers who have been on the police wanted list for between two and three years at Oyibi, in the Greater Accra Region.

That was after the suspects allegedly engaged in an exchange of gunshots with a police patrol team that was pursuing them.

The suspects, identified as Ali Abass alias Ali Hero and Charles Donkor alias Killer Boss, are said to be part of a gang of robbers described by the police as notorious, who operate within the Tema and Accra metropolitan areas.

Items suspected to be used for their operations which were found on them included three SMG Mark rifles, G3 219 millimetre ammunition, two maul hammers, 47 rounds of AK 47 ammunitions, six G3 ammunition, a pair of handcuffs, two axes and a face mask.

Briefing journalists in Accra, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Frederick Adu Anim, said on January 19, 2020, the command’s Intelligence Unit received information about a robbery gang that was planning to embark on a robbery expedition in the Oyibi and Apollonia areas.

Immediately, he said, a team of policemen acting on the information went to Oyibi on surveillance and they intercepted a green Nissan Hard body pick-up with registration number GT 6018-19 with the robbers on board close to the Oyibi checkpoint.

He said when the driver of the vehicle was signalled to stop, he refused and sped off compelling the police team to pursue the vehicle but when they were closing up on the vehicle, the occupants started firing at the police leading to a shoot-out.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles Donkor, sustained gunshot wounds while his accomplices fled but Donkor was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Police Hospital in Accra.

Later, the police picked intelligence that led them to the hideout of the other accomplices at a spot near a block factory at Bawaleshie near Dodowa.

The suspects allegedly engaged the police in an exchange of fire leading to the death of Ali while the others escaped.

DCOP Anim said Ali had been declared wanted by the command for being part of a gang that robbed and raped a resident at a location near Trassaco last year.

He was also part of a gang which attempted to rob a residence at Anyaa on October 7, 2019, where one of them, identified only as CJ, was shot and killed by the victim.

The gang is also said to have been involved in a robbery at a quarry at Kasoa in June, 2019, where they shot a policeman who also shot and killed two of the gang members.

Other crimes they are said to have been involved in include the Royal Motors robbery, Ashaiman Filling Station robbery and Kwabenya jail break.
