Police gun down suspected armed robber at Atebubu-Amantin

Two police escorts accompanying a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus, in the early hours of Monday, gunned down a suspected armed robber at Atebubu-Amantin in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The bus, with registration number AS 8161-Y, was travelling from Sunyani to Yeji when four suspected armed robbers opened fire on the bus, targetting the driver’s side during the journey.

The two escorts fired back at the suspects, leading to the death of one of them.

The incident, which happened around 2 a.m., led to the exchange of gunfire between the two policemen and the four suspected armed robbers.

Police account

The Atebubu District Police Commander, Superintendent Edward Konyel, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said the police escorts later reported the incident to the Atebubu Police before continuing their journey to Yeji.

He said after the suspect was gunned down by the police, his other colleagues ran away, leaving his body by the road side, adding that all the passengers, as well as the driver and the police, were not hurt during the exchange of the gunfire.

He said the police had since been struggling to identify the deceased.

Supt Konyel appealed to the public to cooperate with the police to clamp down on armed robbery in the area.

He also appealed to transport operators to seek police protection during such journeys to ensure the safety of passengers and the protection of their luggage.
