Police get vehicles to ensure sanity on BRT lanes

The Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has taken delivery of five pick-up vehicles, two motorbikes and communication gadgets to be used for monitoring the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes in Accra.

The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), operators and managers of the Quality Bus System (QBS) and BRT, which made the presentation, explained that the vehicles and motorbikes were to assist the MTTD to ensure law and order along the designated lanes.

Already, 30 policemen have been assigned to the various sections of the lanes along the Amasaman and Tudu corridor to assist the marshals of GAPTE to maintain sanity on the lanes.

Assurance

The vehicles were received by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Patrick Adusei Sarpong, on behalf of the MTTD.

He gave an assurance that his outfit would do its best to protect the various lanes from private users, adding that it would work in collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure law and order.

“We expect that by now, drivers would have been educated on why they should not use the bus lanes because the police will not countenance any excuses.In situations where there is the need to arrest culprits, we won’t hesitate to do so,” the officer cautioned.

Use of vehicles

The Head of Transport Planning and Enforcement of GAPTE, Mr Michael Konadu, explained that the vehicles would be used for law enforcement, monitoring and general operations.
