He said resident non-Ghanaians had nothing to worry about concerning their safety, as the GPS was committed to ensuring their safety.

Mr Asante-Apeatu gave the assurance when the Country Director of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr Koji Makino, paid a courtesy call on him to congratulate him on his appointment as IGP.

The IGP called on the public to support the operations of the police and commended the Japanese community in Ghana for being law abiding to the admiration of the service.

He appealed to Mr Makino to continue to encourage the Japanese community in the country to maintain that culture of respect for the laws of Ghana.

“If everybody or majority of the public are law abiding, public security will be enhanced and the operations of the Ghana Police Service will be enhanced as well,” Mr Asante-Apeatu said.

The IGP expressed gratitude to JICA for the support the organisation had given the police over the years, notably sponsoring training programmes for senior police officials, including himself, in Japan.

Emulate Japan

Mr Makino assured the IGP of JICA’s continuing support for the police.

He underscored the need for Mr Asante-Apeatu to bring to bear good practices he observed in Japan while on a training programme there, particularly on community policing, to enhance policing in Ghana.

He said currently, a number of programmes and projects were ongoing in different sectors as part of Japan’s contribution to the local economy.
