Police battle four robbers

Police shot dead a suspected armed robber and wounded two others during a shoot-out at Asonkore, a suburb of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, on Thursday night.

The robbers, numbering four, had attacked a gold dealer at Asonkore before police reacted to a distress call to save the victim.

The deceased has been identified as Malik Iddrisu, 20, while the names of those who got injured have been given as Philip Asamoah Boateng, 22, and Rashid Mohammed, 19.

The fourth suspect, who escaped with a pump action gun, is yet to be identified.

The police have appealed to residents in and around the Asonkore community to furnish them with information about the suspect to help in further investigations.

They promised not to disclose the identity of the informants.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Obuasi Divisional Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Kwabena Otuo Acheampong, said the police received a distress call about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, that armed robbers had attacked a gold dealer in the mining-rich municipal capital.

The reaction from the police was swift, as men were sent to the area, but on reaching the crime scene, the robbers opened gunfire at the police in an attempt to escape.

DSP Acheampong said police retuned fire and three of the robbers were hit by bullets.

One of them died, while two sustained injuries. The injured are receiving treatment in a hospital under heavy police guard.

Police recovered from the suspects two locally-manufactured pistols, four live cartridges, three spent cartridges, a knife, a sword and charms and amulets.

Thankfully, the crime officer said the robbers could not take anything away from the house of their victim.

Besides, no one, apart from the robbers, was injured in the attack.
