Police arrest police for one-way driving ( Video )

There was drama on the Official Street leading into Adabraka on Monday when officers from the police Motor Traffic and Transport Department arrested a number of traffic offenders during a rush hour operation.

Among those arrested and looking visibly embarrassed were policemen and other security agents who routinely abuse the one-way road that enters Adabraka from the railway line overhead bridge on the Graphic Road.

A pick-up carrying four policemen apparently on their way home from work, a saloon car carrying two Ghana Immigration Service officers and a host of other civilians some of who flashed one ID card or another in their attempt to evade arrest, were all booked for a date in court.

Traffic usually builds on the Adabraka – Kaneshie road especially from Odawna through Adabraka Official Town, and the impatient drivers often use the Official street, which is a one-way drive and usually empty at this time of the day, to outsmart the law abiding who must stay in the frustrating traffic.

It is therefore uncommon to see drivers and commuters complain about the open abuse, indulged in by both civilian and uniformed drivers.

On this occasion, the law abiding were all cheers as they commended the police for freeing traffic.

The sting operation by men from the Central MTTD took the offenders by surprise, allowing the offenders to drive right in to the waiting hands of the police. Previously when such operations had been undertaken, the offenders would make a quick detour onto the Brewery Loop to escape arrest.

The police insisted only emergency vehicles - an ambulance, a fire engine or security operational vehicles would be allowed to flow against traffic.
