Police arrest developer over alleged use of landguards

The Property Fraud Unit of the Ghana Police Service, last Friday arrested the Managing Director of Universal Consult Limited, an Estate Developer, Mr Richard Selasie Mugenzi, for allegedly using landguards to harrass and destroy the properties of some residents of Broadcasting, New Bortianor in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The arrest followed a report by a resident, Mr Kwesi Afful, alleging that the suspect (Mugenzi) brought eight landguards in the night to destroy his property with the intention of taking over the property, which did not belong to him.

This came to light when a team of police officers and some journalists visited the area last Saturday to ascertain the veracity of the claims by the residents.

According to the report, which was confirmed by the police, the suspect entered the property allegedly owned by Mr Afful, on November 8, 2019, with some landguards and pulled down a fence wall which was built around a six-plot property and also threatened to “deal” with the workers at the site.

A report was made to the police, who had laid surveillance on the suspect who is also the Managing Director of Kamman Engineering Company Limited for weeks, until he was arrested at Kaneshie last Friday.

The police also used the occasion to warn groups and individuals against the perpetration of lawlessness on innocent Ghanaians and gave an assurance that the law would deal ruthlessly with anyone found guilty of taking the law into their own hands.

The police further urged members of the various communities to report anything suspicious to them for redress.

The use of landguards to cause mayhem has been of grave concern to the people, particularly those in sprawling communities.

The situation has compelled the Inspector General of Police to warn that his outfit will deal with those who commit such crimes.
