The Patriotic Muslim Front (PMF), a civil society organisation comprising young Muslim intellectuals, businesspeople and students, has urged Ghanaians to support the appointment of Emilia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), describing the decision as a step in the right direction for the country’s democracy.
In a press release dated October 18, 2026, and signed by executive member Haruna Mohammed on behalf of the organisation in Accra, the PMF said it was confident that the appointee would bring competence, integrity, fairness and impartiality to the management of Ghana's electoral processes.
The organisation said it had followed the appointee's professional career and service and believed she possessed the qualities required to contribute meaningfully to the work of the Electoral Commission.
According to the PMF, Ghana needs capable and principled individuals to oversee its elections and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
The organisation also expressed concern about what it described as attempts by some partisan voices to tarnish the reputation of the newly appointed official.
“As Muslims who believe in justice and fairness, we cannot sit silent while a few partisan voices try to tarnish a competent Ghanaian woman who has been duly appointed to serve her country,” the statement read.
The PMF maintained that the appointment was made in accordance with the 1992 Constitution and urged Ghanaians to respect the process.
It further called on the appointee to remain focused, firm and impartial in the discharge of her responsibilities, stressing the importance of fairness and professionalism in safeguarding the country's democratic institutions.
The organisation said the new Deputy Chairperson should work towards strengthening Ghana's democracy in the interest of all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliations.
It emphasised that the Electoral Commission plays a critical role in ensuring credible elections and maintaining public trust in the country's democratic system.
The PMF also appealed to Ghanaians, particularly members of the Muslim community, to pray for and support the Electoral Commission as it carries out its constitutional mandate.
The organisation concluded by invoking Allah's guidance and blessings for the appointee and Ghana, expressing hope that her tenure would contribute positively to the country's democratic development.
