The University for Development Studies (UDS) has granted admission to Master Peter Banoebuuri to pursue his dream of becoming a medical doctor.
His admission letter from the university, signed by Mr Nurudeen Issah Abubakar, a Senior Assistant Registrar in charge of Academic Affairs, on behalf of the registrar, stated, "I write on behalf of the Academic Board of the university to offer you admission to the University for Development Studies to pursue a seven-year course leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree."
Master Banoebuuri, a former Science student at the Nandom Senior High School in the Upper West Region, scored A1 in seven of the eight subjects in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in June 2013 but could not continue his education to the university as a result of financial difficulties.
The Registrar of the UDS, Dr A.B.T. Zakariah, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic in his office, said the university had fulfilled its side of the promise and was waiting on the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to honour its part, as directed by President John Dramani Mahama that Master Banoebuuri be granted full scholarship to pursue the course.
According to the admission letter, Master Banoebuuri is required to pay GH¢2,198 as his fees for the first year.
Background
The story of Master Banoebuuri, who could not gain admission to the UDS Medical School as a result of financial difficulties, was first highlighted by the Daily Graphic in its February 12, 2015 edition.
The story stated that "the ambition of a 20-year-old graduate of the Nandom Senior High School to become a medical doctor after obtaining seven A1s and a B3 in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is under threat".
"This is because Master Banoebuuri could not raise funds to pursue his dream, after he had been offered admission by the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) of the University for Development Studies in 2014," it said.
The story attracted the attention of President Mahama, who directed the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to grant full scholarship to Master Banoebuuri to enable him to undertake the course at the UDS.
