Passengers injured in Medie Junction accident

A number of passengers sustained injuries in a multiple accident at Medie Junction in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region yesterday.

An Nsawam-bound tipper truck loaded with sand is reported to have rammed into a Sprinter bus with 19 passengers, which also ran into a Toyota Hiace bus with 13 passengers.

The tipper truck with registration number, GG 1142-16, ran into the Sprinter bus (with registration number GT 5327-16) when it reportedly joined the main road from a bus stop at Medie.

The Sprinter bus, which had its roof completely removed, hit the Toyota Hiace bus before crumbling on to the street, making it difficult for oncoming vehicles to have access to the road.

Injured

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Mr Eric Anang, told the Daily Graphic that the injured were conveyed to the Nsawam Government Hospital.

When the Daily Graphic got to the scene at 12:15 p.m., scores of residents were at the scene taking photographs of the vehicles while others were in groups discussing the incident.

Some residents were also seen searching for personal effects of the injured in the two passenger vehicles, a situation which led to verbal exchanges among some of the bystanders.

Police personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) who were at the scene had a hectic time controlling the crowd to make way for the free flow of traffic, resulting in a gridlock along the stretch.

The personnel, however, failed to comment on the incident when the Daily Graphic contacted them.

Relocate bus stop

Some of the residents called on the Ghana Highway Authority and the Ga West Municipal Assembly to relocate the bus stop from the junction, as similar accidents had occurred at the spot on several occasions.

They also requested that the portion of the road around the accident scene, which is in bad condition, should be reconstructed.
