He said he was worried about the rate of depletion and destruction of natural resources, especially our water bodies by galamsey operators, illegal felling of trees without replacement at all levels and the poor refuse management and described them as a major setback to development.

The Asantehene was speaking during a courtesy call on him by the chairman of Ghana National Scholarship Beneficiaries Association (GNASBA), Baffour Akwasi Oppong, and a delegation from Fan Milk Limited.

The delegation had gone to the Manhyia Palace to congratulate the Asantehene on the 15th Anniversary Celebration of his enstoolment as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu said issues of the environment were the concern of all and that was why the efforts of GNASBA in its Schools Environmental Sanitation Education campaign must be encouraged and given the needed support.

He, therefore, appealed to Fan Milk Limited to help maintain its partnership with GNASBA in order for the association to do more countrywide and commended Baffour Akwasi Oppong for his tireless sacrifices.

Baffour Akwasi Oppong, for his part, extended the association’s congratulations to the Asantehene and commended him for his inspirational leadership that had brought new dimensions in chieftaincy countrywide.

He announced that the association had targeted to help plant and grow 30,000 tree seedlings with some selected schools countrywide starting from Ayamfuri in the Western Region.

He said the Forestry Commission would supply all the seedlings while some mining companies, which had been supporting the GNASBA Schools Tree Planting for the past 20 years, would offer assistance.

He named the companies as Ashanti Goldfields Obuasi Mine, Newmont Ghana Gold (Ahafo and Akyem Mines), Golden Star Limited, Tarkwa Goldfields, Abosso Goldfields, Chirano Gold Mines & Peruses Gold Mines.
