Organised Labour has postponed the celebration of this year’s International Workers’ Day, commonly known as May Day or Solidarity Day.

A release signed by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress of Ghana, Dr Yaw Baah, said the cancellation was in compliance with the directive on movement restriction in Greater Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi.

“I regret to inform all workers and the general public that all 2020 May Day activities have been cancelled,” the statement said.

It urged all workers to “stay at home on May Day and continue to comply with all the safety protocols aimed at warding off COVID-19.”

The statement was hopeful that the celebration would resume next year.

May Day parade

Every May 1, organised labour holds a parade during which labour unions and many companies and organisations march in solidarity.

The occasion of May Day is generally attended by the President or Vice-President, during which labour and the government exchange ideas on pertinent national issues that border on people’s welfare, social inequality, employee emoluments and social interventions.
