The operating licence of the private security firm, Kantanka Security Services Limited, has been suspended by the Ministry of the Interior with immediate effect.
The move comes 24 hours after personnel from the private security company were involved in a shooting incident that resulted in injury to Sarah Adwoa Safo, a former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya and daughter of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo, who owns Kantanka.
The personnel were providing security services in the residence of Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena, Adwoa Safo's junior brother, where a family dispute over succession of their late father turned bloody with the firing of gunshots on Sunday.
Private security companies are not allowed to use firearms per the law that grants them an operating licence.
But preliminary investigations by the police indicate that personnel from the Kantanka Security Services Limited were armed with shotguns and a pistol when six of them were arrested by the police on Sunday after the shooting incident.
Following the report of alleged use of an unprescribed uniform, possession and use of firearms and ammunition by personnel of the company in the course of providing private security services on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at Kwabenya in Accra, the Ministry of the Interior has, with immediate effect, suspended operating licence, a statement from the ministry indicated.
The ministry explained that the decision was taken after preliminary investigations indicated possible violations of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), which govern the operation of Private Security Organisations in Ghana.
Consequently, the Ministry has directed the company to immediately cease all operations forthwith pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.
All institutions have also been advised to refrain from conducting business with Kantanka Security Services Limited pending the conclusion of investigations and further directives from the Ministry.
The Ministry has further instructed the company to cooperate fully with the Ghana Police Service and to provide all necessary information to facilitate a thorough investigation.
