One dead in Jomoro floods

One person died as more than 11 communities in the Jomoro District in the Western Region were flooded following several hours of downpour last Thursday.  Property, including livestock, personal effects and farm produce, was completely destroyed.

According to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Sylvester Nuamah Daddieh, over 6,000 residents living in hundreds of homes have been affected.

He said the assembly was currently doing everything possible to collaborate with the District National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to ensure the safety of the people.

The affected communities, which included New-Town Wharf, Efassu, Anlomatuope, Half Assini, Ekpu, and Atwebanso, he said, were mainly farming and fishing communities and even though they usually got flooded during the rainy seasons, this year’s was unprecedented.

Some of the residents told the Daily Graphic that they had lost all their belongings to the flood.

They said the dead person attempted switching on an electrical gadget in his flooded room and was immediately electrocuted.

The District Police Commander, Superintendent John F Dzineku, confirmed the death of one person.
