Nzema chiefs raises issues with new Ghana Gas CEO's appointment

The chiefs of Nzema in the Western Region have expressed concerns over President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Dr. Ben Asante as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company.

The chiefs want the president to reconsider his appointment and rather opt for one Professor Kaku Sagary Nokoe who they consider their kin and whose CV they say has been forwarded for the consideration of the president.

At a press conference held Saturday at the Nsein palace, addressed by Awulae Agyevi Kwame Iii, Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Area on behalf of the Nsein Traditional Council and supported by Awulae Angama Tuagyan II, Chairman of the Nzema Manle Council and the Paramount Chief of the Bamiankor Traditional Area, the chiefs said while they did not seek to usurp the president’s constitutional prerogative, they believe Prof Nokoe is more fitting for the job.

“Our appeal against the processing, declaration and confirmation of the nominee Dr, Ben Asante and the suggestion of Professor Sagary Nokoe, however, is informed by extensive social intelligence gathered plus the weighing strengths of the latter based on his outstanding contributions to the development of the country both local, regional, national and international level (succinctly shared in CV referred to earlier).

“First and foremost, is the need for a socially harmonious working environment for the Ghana National Gas Company as accommodated at Atuabo. It is worth recalling that issues relating to the taking of individual farmlands without the prerequisite engagement and payment of compensation here, tamed by several interventions by traditional leadership and the general goodwill of the people, sacrificing their individual livelihoods for the national interest. As things stand now however, the majority of the same group of stakeholder Groups; predominantly the Chiefs, Family Heads, Youth Groups, Farmers and Fishermen have expressed fuming dissatisfaction against Dr Ben Asante’s nomination, threatening to make things difficult for the Ghana Gas Company should the government fail or refuse to consider this appeal.

“This is a serious wind whose direction and destination must be given serious attention by all, as we Awulaemo, Awulaehenmamo and our subjects believe strongly that supporting the President in his crusade for Positive Change towards moving our nation forward; and so need to give this hints before situations becomes irreversible and irreparable.”

“His Excellency Nana, the President, as we may not fully doubt the credibility in the man you have chosen for the job, much as we appreciate the exhaustiveness of your search machinery, we equally want (to) state without any equivocations that Professor Kaku Sagary Nokoe is more fit.

“He is a man of the soil who understands the sociocultural, economic, security, political and environmental dynamics of the terrain attested by his being awarded recently by the Nzema Maanle Council and other NGOs within the region”, the chiefs counselled.
