The nine-member executive, with Mr Prosper Dzitse as President, will serve a one-year term for the 2014/2015 academic year.

Speaking at the ceremony, the NUGS Chief Justice (CJ), Mr Tony Nyarko, who led the executive to take the oath of office, charged them to protect and defend the values of the union.

He also urged them to eschew all forms of immorality that would tarnish the image of the union.

Inaugural speech

In his inaugural speech, Mr Dzitse paid glowing tribute to Ghanaian students for working in support of NUGS over the years, particularly in the last decade, stressing that what made NUGS a true union of all Ghanaian students was the commitment of the national executive to the ideals of the union.

He said during his tenure of office, NUGS would continue to champion the welfare of students and work with related organisations, groups and society at large to champion a purposeful leadership, adding that the intention of NUGS, during his term, was to establish an award system that sought to honour hard-working student leaders and other students annually.

“It is also our intention to know the number of students on government scholarship abroad and how their education is funded,” he said, indicating that that would help monitor the challenges confronting those students in relation to the release of government subventions to take care of their education.

Dignitaries present were Mrs Sheila Naa Boamah, the CEO of the Student Loan Trust Fund; a Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who chaired the ceremony, and the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Samuel Awuku.
