NMC appoints Francisca Ashietey-Odunton as Deputy Director-General of GBC

Francisca Ashietey-OduntonThe National Media Commission (NMC), in consultation with the President, has appointed Mrs Francisca Ashietey-Odunton as the new Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for a four-year term, effective  November 1, 2013.

Mrs Ashietey-Odunton, after completing her primary education, proceeded to Aburi Girls’ Senior High School for both her General Certificate of Education (Ordinary and Advanced Level) courses.

She pursued university education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences, with a major in English.

A barrister at Law with 16 years experience,  Mrs  Ashietey-Odunton was called to the Ghana Bar in 1997 after obtaining an LLB  from the Ghana School of Law.

She also holds a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science and is a graduate of the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan.

She has been a journalist with the GBC for over 20 years and enters her new position with a huge experience in the broadcasting industry.

She joined GBC in 1990 as a senior production assistant attached to the Production Division where she worked on various programmes, including Kyekyekule, Children’s Own, Adult Education and Country Music.

She was also a TV presenter.

She rose to the rank of producer/director, after which she was transferred to the TV Newsroom in 1994 as editor and served in several capacities, including news reading and reporting, during which she served as a presidential reporter for eight years.

She was later promoted to the position of chief editor and was transferred to the Legal Division in 2010 as a Senior Legal Officer.

Until her appointment, she was the acting director of Legal Services at GBC.

She is married with two children.
