Asantewaa, then a school girl, was presenting a bouquet of flowers to Dr Kwame Nkrumah on August 11,1962, when a bomb went off causing her to lose a leg in the process.

President Nkrumah was thought to be the target of the bomb.

According to Asantewaa, the late President could not hold back his tears when he visited her at the hospital.

“I was at the hospital and in real pain when I was told that the President was there to visit me. I couldn’t believe it but it was true; I saw him by my bedside and in our conversation, he started crying and I saw tears in his eyes,” she told Accra-based Starr FM Thursday.

Asantewaa said Dr Nkrumah aslo promised to support her through life, but could not deliver on his promise, following his overthrow in a coup in 1966.

“He promised to help me since I was only a victim of an attack on him. He sponsored my treatment in London but after his demise, I haven’t really received any help from subsequent governments,” she said.
