A statement issued by the Corporate Affairs Department of the NIA said the new schedule, which will begin from March 22, 2014, was to enable people to collect their national identification cards.

It explained that the move was to give people who wished to collect their national ID cards but could not do so during the week days the chance to do so on Saturdays.

“Only persons who registered during the mass registration exercise in the Greater Accra Region have their cards ready for collection,” it stated.

The statement indicated that people who registered at the NIA head office before March 2013 could also acquire their cards.

It emphasised that the registration of and card issuance to citizens remained free of charge and, therefore, any person who received money for the said services committed an offence punishable by law.
