An American non-governmental organisation (NGO), Oasis of Love Restoration Centre (OLRGC), has expressed interest in constructing an educational complex at Adaklu Awanyaviefe in the Volta Region to provide children in the area with the opportunity to learn.

The NGO has, therefore, entered into a partnership with a group of local entrepreneurs and has acquired a 20 acres  for the project.

The founder of the NGO, Rev. Dr Mary Ellen Ciganeki, said she was touched to hear that many junior high school students in Ho stood very little chance of making it to a higher level to eventually become useful to society because of the high rate of failure in terminal examinations.

School of Promise

She said it was based on this information that she had decided to set up a school, tagged School of Promise, to absorb orphans and disadvantaged youth in order that they might also avail themselves of the promise and opportunity that a good education offered.

She said the school project would involve provision of boarding facilities, computer laboratories and classrooms for regular learners and students undertaking remedial classes to enable them to study for resit of the failed papers.

Scholarships

Rev. Dr Ellen said a scholarship scheme was already on offer for pupils and students in Adaklu. She said seven students had already benefitted from the scheme; one was in the university, three in senior high school and three others in junior high school.

She disclosed that the school project would in addition have a Home Science department that would admit students interested in fruit processing, baking and other income-generating activities.

According to her, a similar venture, the Tampa Street School, has been established in the state of Florida in the United States of America for teenagers who had lost their right to education. She said she was hopeful that a replication of the School of Promise in Ghana would be worthwhile.

Unique project

The head of the local group of partners to the NGO, Rev. Fred Agbogbo, said the project was unique because it had a Christian component that would instil good moral values in the lives of the students. Moreover, he said the project was tailored to contribute to the developmental objectives of the Adaklu District.

According to him, the Adaklu District was unique because it was easy to mobilise resources both material and human for development activities and as such commended the people for their understanding.

An evangelist from the USA, Reverend Gary Nolan, in a sermon, said what was about to happen in Adaklu was an opportunity opened for the people in accordance with the will of God.
