The project was executed by the assembly and financed by the World Bank through the Urban Development Grant at a cost of GH¢2,173,186.00.

The assembly has allocated the stores to generate funds to construct a third floor of the building.

At a short ceremony to inaugurate the facilities, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Isaac Appaw-Gyasi, stated that the new station would accommodate drivers and passengers who plied the Adukrom-Somanya-Kpone-Ho-Akosombo routes among other routes.

Taskforce

Mr Appaw-Gyasi urged the leadership of the transport unions to encourage their members who had been using the shoulders of the roads as parking and loading points to relocate to the main station.

The assembly, the MCE stated, would set up a taskforce to ensure that drivers who did not comply with instructions were dealt with according to the law, adding that “the station has come to stay so we need your support to let it succeed”.

He assured all drivers and members of transport unions who plied the Eastern enclave that the assembly would not allow rival unions to operate the same routes.

Business permits

The assembly, Mr Appaw-Gyasi indicated, was undertaking an inspection of business permits in the entire municipality and entreated all transport union branches to encourage their members to obtain the needed permit for the routes they plied.

According to him, the assembly would make sure that once a route had been registered, it would not be given out to anybody else who applied for the same route.

Regarding security and streetlights for the new station and the stores, the MCE said plans were far advanced to provide traders and drivers with the needed security and lights to enhance visibility and keep criminals away.

Commercial transport

The Gyasehene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Twumasi Adarkwa, said the commercial transport business in the municipality and its adjoining communities had been given a boost following the opening of the newly constructed lorry station in Koforidua.

According to him, the traditional council would partner the assembly to deploy a taskforce at vantage points to stop commercial drivers who loaded at unauthorised points from doing so.
